An Officer's Funeral

Well, I haven't had a chance to post until just now because we whirled out of town and have been busy busy busy since then and I'm still whirling. Anyway the funeral was pretty amazing. It was held in a big conference center and was filled with law enforcement from around the country, mostly from all over the state and their families. It was an extremely touching meeting and most if not every one in the crowd was teary eyed.

I have personally had a pretty hard time with this and have had a hard time trying to reason with it. Maybe it's because in the back of my mind I keep thinking that this could happen to me tomorrow. I've also realized that I suppress the worry that I feel every day, because if I didn't I'd go crazy. BJ said that all of the officers came away from the funeral with similar stories about their wives. We've all been beside ourselves for the last 3 weeks. It just hits a little too close to home.

Some of the cool things in the family part of the funeral was that he and his wife's song was "You are my sunshine" and they both sang "Teach me to walk in the light" to their baby twins every night. She had a cousin play a piano medley of those two songs and then "Families can be together forever". I wish I could convey the spirit that was present, it was so strong. I think the sweetest and hardest part of the funeral was when his mother in-law said that in the hospital he wouldn't leave his wife's side at all. She came to relieve him and told him to go get some rest and after a couple of times he turned around and said, "I can't leave, what if she needs me?" and her mom said, "Who better to leave her with to take care of her than her own mother?" He looked at her really hard and said, "ME!" It was sad to think of how much he wanted to be with his family and to be there for them.

The Police part was really neat. There were 113 motorcycle police alone along with several other officers from almost every department in the state. The furthest we heard that came were from Georgia and Florida. That is just the law enforcement brotherhood. It was really something else. The officers from surrounding precincts (BJ) all stood at attention while the funeral party passed with all of the patrons. The procession was at least 3-5 miles long in and of itself(Mostly police cars and motorcycles), and the Highway Patrol stopped traffic at every intersection. Cars were backed up literally for miles. I was in the tail end of it carring the lead dispatcher and the chief assistant (they were helping me with the kids). An elementary school came outside and the students waved flags.

The street on the way to the gravesite (which was quite a ways) was lined with flags. People were also lining the streets some with their hands over their hearts, some with their hats over their hearts. There were even people with signs that said, "Thank you officer Charlie Skinner". It's not very often that these guys see and hear the support of the public and it was very touching for all involved. The fire department hung a huge flag over the street as we all arrived.

I tried to take a picture of the gravesite as we were walking up, but I couldn't get the whole crowd or all of the police cars since a lot of them ended up on the street. If you click on this picture it will pull it up big and you can kind of see how many people were there (you can barely see the little dots of heads) They couldn't get the jets to do a fly over as low as they needed it so they had a police helicopter and air med do a fly over in the missing man formation. The thing that really got me was when they did the final call. They had all of the officers turn on their radios and dispatch came over the radio and said, "November 13--Bountiful. (pause) November 13--Bountiful. (Pause) November 13--Bountiful. (Pause)" Then they thanked him for his valiant service and ultimate sacrifice and signed him off for the last time "10-42". It was electric. Anyway, I was only able to get 3 pictures at the funeral because my hands were a little full and I was quite emotional. I think I cried for 2 hours straight after it was over. Now that we've been out of town and back, I'm finally starting to feel better, though it is still heavy on my mind. I don't think I'll ever forget and even though I don't know them personally, his family will always hold a place in my heart.

going private?

I have been pondering the possibility of making our site private. If you want to have access please let me know and give me your emails so I can add them. I need to figure it out, too... so just let me know.

On a positive note

I have some cute pictures I just realized I have yet to blog about. So here goes. I have told some of you the story and here is proof. About a month ago... or was it longer than that... anyway, Olivia got a hold of my blue sharpee and decided to use my beige couch as her canvas. It is all over my cushions. All over. It was also all over her. I would have taken another picture of the guilty party but that was the day my camera died.
(I have yet to charge it)After a freak out on my part
(I screamed--really, I never scream, but I really did) she started to cry, which brought me back to earth. I picked her up and gave her a hug and told her it wasn't her fault and started laughing, trying to tell myself that this will be a good story someday. I called BJ at work and said, "Don't freak out..." and told him what happened. Anyway, It looks worse in person, seriously, everyone that knows about it and turns over the cushion to see it says, "WHOA that's bad! Worse than I thought it would be!", and I still haven't been able to get it out of my couch. The cushions are turned over for now... hopefully if I keep working on it diligently it will come out.
Micro fiber is supposed to be the most family friendly material so we will see. She also got my coffee table and I have been unable to remove that one. I've tried everything I can think of. Cheap hairspray sort of works, but it didn't take it off at all. Ahhhh toddlerhood. Who could really be mad at that?

Charlie...

We just recieved word that they are taking Charlie off of life support today and saying goodbye. I can't tell you how hard this is for all of the officers and their families. Us included. He was a good man and a good officer and died in the line of duty. An honorable thing. My heart sincerely goes out to his family. I know that the Lord is with them giving them strenghth and comfort. I wish there was more that we could do. Unless there is a miracle, his wife will be left alone with the twins now. They will be all that she has. This obviously hits home for us, and I'm grateful it wasn't my husband, but it was someone elses and my heart is breaking for her. Please keep his family in your prayers, along with all of the officers who leave their families every day to protect and serve our communities. It is a valiant thing that is often taken for granted.

Prayers Appreciated

This is a guy that BJ sometimes works with. This happened early Monday morning. He patrols in one of the surrounding cities, and these guys back each other up like brothers. We are full of compassion for his family and ask that your prayers be offered on their behalf. He and his wife just had twins 3 weeks ago and I just can't imagine what she is going through. Yesterday we were told that he had had a rough night, and in the morning his prognosis looked better, but he is still in critical condition. This could have easily been my husband. I'm grateful he is on days this month. He started his shift a little over 2 1/2 hours after the chase started. We haven't had any updates today... no news is good news we hope. Thanks for your support!

Happy Halloween!

I feel like I'm so behind in getting things up on this lately! Here are our trick or treating pictures!

Here's our cute little lady bug taking a turn driving the car. Mommy really needed the break. ;)

We took Olivia to a safe neighborhood that BJ knew about. BJ took his lunch break so he could come with us and helped me with both of the kids. Olivia had so much fun running running running!

Livi and BJ... He's telling her to look at mommy and smile.

Once we started going she really got into it... and really got sick of me holding her hand. She only wanted BJ by the time we were done and she kept taking off her hat so her hair is terrible, but she was still the cutest little ladybug on the block.

She's good at listening to her daddy. At least she looked at Mommy. How obedient.

Every house we stopped at said something about her, no matter how many other kids were at the door. She is a cutie!(That was not correct english. I know houses can't talk, but you know what I mean)

I was getting Olivia ready and decided that I would use her cute lady bug hair things and dress up like one, too. It was fun! It's been a long time since I dressed up for Halloween.

Ethan was my little glow worm, but you missed his outfit because, well... we were in a little bit of a hurry and he was turning into a fuss face.

Me and my babies. Can you see that we are about to leave? Tired and grumpy.

Happy Halloween everyone! I hope yours were as fun as ours!
